PROJECT SNOWFLAKE

Every year the school hosts a fundraiser and each class is assigned the task of creating an auction item for the event that ties in to what they are studying.  The kindergarten class has been studying the 5 senses, so I helped them put together the idea and execute their project.  Project Snowflake.

We decided on snowflakes because the kids are studying the 5 senses and each child in the class has his/her own distinct personality, so we thought that they could represent themselves as snowflakes. Snowflakes are the perfect way to illustrate their study of the 5 senses because snowflakes can be experienced through all of the senses.   The smell of the snow, the feel of the cold, the taste of the flake on your tongue, the  beauty of them falling together or their uniqueness when separated and the  sound depending if it's quiet or windy.

Right before we began this project the kids actually studied the snow through a microscope and learned about snow from one of our dads, who happens to be a snow scientist.  Synergy!

Step 1:  We had the class paint a 3x5 canvas with acrylic paint in hues of blue, gray and white with no specific instructions, other than to cover the canvass.    Look how beautiful it turned out.

Step 2:  Prep the paper (white printer paper) for the kids to make the perfect 6-pointed snowflake. This guide was easy to follow and the best thing I found for making sure the paper was just right. http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-6-Pointed-Paper-Snowflakes/

We presented each child with a practice paper and the real deal when they were ready.  We provided instructions and assisted each child individually with cutting out their carefully designed snowflake .  This was a challenge because some kids could cut and others needed help.  In the end they all turned out beautifully.

Step 3:  Each child decorated their snowflake with glitter dust using shimmer glitter and adhesive spray.

Step 4:  Each child's snowflake was placed on the canvas in the location of their choosing.

Step 5:  The adults finished the art work by painting on mod podge to protect the art and keep the glittery snowflakes in place.

Voila! The final product is simply beautiful.
